ART INSTALLATION FOR THE STAGE OF THE ARRAY SPACE, TORONTO. FOR THE ARRAYMUSIC ENSEMBLE'S TRIBUTE TO THE LATE ESTONIAN-CANADIAN COMPOSER, UDO KASEMETS DECEMBER 2014
Nylon filament, aluminum pipes, LED lights and sandbags
UDOTIMESHAPE takes its inspiration from the avant-garde composer's written scores and their use of graphic symbols and ancient charts, and their experimentation with conventional music notation.
We began with the five lines of the musical staff - bent them, warped them, stretched them, gathered them - pulled them up, over and around pipes - into an Udoesque representation of musical time.
As an integrated visual backdrop to the performance, our ghostly homage intended to invoke the spirit of the composer through the expression of the underlying philosophy of his music- chance, change and cosmic totality.
